About Prehistoric Waterford

Growing up  in the heart of Ireland's 'Boyne Valley', I've always had a strong appreciation of the wonderful and world renowned archaeological treasures that survive there.  Just down the road from home were famous sites such as Monasterboice, Mellifont, Knowth & Dowth and the ancient architectural marvel of Newgrange.

Having  lived in Waterford for 26 years, I have become aware of the wonderful rich legacy of Prehistoric remains that this county has to offer.

Photography has always been a part of my life and the setting up of Prehistoric Waterford has given me the perfect opportunity to combine this with my keen interest in archaeology.

Launched in 2010, Prehistoric Waterford was the first website of its type in Ireland -  a site which is entirely dedicated to the megalithic monuments of one particular county. The compiling of the site has been a wonderful journey, taking me to some very special places and meeting some fantastic and very co operative people who were always most hospitable and more than willing to help.

The website endeavours to provide the best possible description of each monument, including a portrayal of each location. Also here and there, is  a healthy ‘dash’ of speculation about some of the monuments, their uses, and the social and spiritual roles they may have played in Prehistoric times.

One of the prime aims of Prehistoric Waterford is to stimulate interest in these fascinating megalithic artifacts, which in turn will hopefully promote appreciation of their significance in the landscape and therefore help to ensure their survival for many generations to come.
