Defacing of Monuments

It’s not very often encountered, but when seen, it is most unsightly and particularly disrespectful. That is the defacing of monuments usually by the adding of wording such as initials etc which is sometimes crudely etched into the stone.

One example of this can be currently seen on the standing stone at the Bearna na Madra gap in the Comeragh Mountains.

Most likely these acts of graffiti are carried out by those who are unaware of the importance of these stones which are classified as National Monuments. Sadly, and without hesitation, they proceed to treat them in a manner similar to that of carving ones initials on a tree trunk.

One of the main goals of the Prehistoric Waterford website is to heighten people’s awareness of these marvellous ancient monuments which exist in profusion throughout Co. Waterford and to help develop an appreciation of them.

In this regard, we all have a part to play, by making our friends and our children more aware of Ireland’s rich heritage and that these seemingly lonely standing stones are of much more significance than they first appear to be.
